The word for October 2024, is SAINTS
Mala Powers’ book, Follow the Year, includes a brief summary of All Saints’ Day. When
Christianity replaced the Roman and Druid religions in Great Britain, November 1 was
dedicated to Christian martyrs and saints who had died. During the Middle Ages, animal
costumes and frightening masks were worn to ward off the evil spirits of darkness on “All
Hallows Eve” – Hallowe’en. Grinning Jack-O’-Lanterns can be seen across the United States,
and costumed children ring doorbells on Hallowe’en with merry “threats” of “Trick or
Treat.” Today, people no longer take ancient Hallowe’en customs seriously, for through the
centuries Christians have learned to turn to prayer instead of ‘charms’ to overcome the
powers of darkness.
The deeper Christian meaning of All Saints’ Day draws us closer to Christ when we
remember and give thanks for loved ones and for others who have gone before us into the
nearer presence of God. The Sunday, November 3, service of worship will center on All
Saints’ Day, and will be led by members of the congregation. We will celebrate the Lord’s
Supper on November 10.

All Saints’ Day Prayer
Eternal God, neither death nor life can separate us from your love. Grant that we may
serve you faithfully here on earth, and in heaven rejoice with all your saints who
ceaselessly proclaim your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit one God, forever and ever. Amen.
